Anchor Education has had the pleasure of working with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) in some of its outreach programs. This non-profit organization reaches 3.3 million boys & girls in 2,591 clubs located in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands plus domestic and international military bases.

Tens of thousands of trained professionals and countless volunteers provide quality programs focusing on personal growth and achievement. Every local club makes a positive impact on young lives by building self-esteem and encouraging the development of value and skills during critical periods of childhood growth.

Among the programs æ brought to the BGCA:

  • Picture Yourself in the New Millennium on behalf of Jet Propulsion Laboratory; and,

  • Name the Lion Contest on behalf of America's Teaching Zoo.
We think the artwork below speaks volumes about the talent of the clubs' young members and the devotion of its career professionals and volunteers.

Picture Yourself in the New Millennium

This program, sponsored by Jet Propulsion Laboratory and BGCA, challenged young children and teens to think about their lives in the new millennium. About 1,000 pictures, poems and essays, along with the names of the contributors, were placed on a CD-ROM aboard the Deep Space 1 spacecraft launched in July 1998.

Eight-year-old Samantha was thinking of personal flight when she created her "People Can Fly" picture.

Nine-year-old Leticia was thinking about a laid-back and cool alien who visits our planet on a friendly mission.

Name the Lion Contest

Nearly 1500 children participated in the Name the Lion contest, sponsored by America's Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College and BGCA. Katie Harrington, of Chandler, Ariz., provided the lion's new name, Savannah.

The artwork submitted by six-year-old Tatiana, provided a unique glimpse of a lion named Kate Love. Below that is the charming "Singhah," created by Tor, 10.
