Fighting Ataxia Telangiectasia (A-T)
Like most people, the folks at Anchor Education had never heard of Ataxia Telangiectasia (A-T), until our Dr. Jerry described its effects on a beautiful young woman, Becca Smith, in his Humanities Class at Moorpark College. (To be honest most of us still can’t pronounce the name of this devastating genetic disorder, so, we just call it A-T.) A-T was for a long time confused with cerebral palsy, because it does so much of the same kind of damage. The difference is that A-T is a progressively degenerative disease of the nervous system, which like many other problems we humans suffer, is caused by genetic inheritance. About 2,000,000 Americans carry the defective A-T gene. One in three children with A-T will get cancer and most are ultimately afflicted with severe immune system failures. With the recent break-through in genetic research there is new hope on the A-T horizon, but we simply can’t ask kids suffering from A-T to live on hope! Since A-T doesn’t hurt and kill huge numbers, the demand for research in pharmaceuticals and medicine is far from adequate! Here are a couple of things you or your company can do to fight A-T:
